The project involved the complete refurbishment and extension of the old Coach House at The Bishops Palace (Heritage Council Offices), Church Lane, Kilkenny. The Coach House is a 3 bay single storey rubble building dating from 1825. The Coach House is a protected structure which required sensitive structural repairs and consolidation of the existing structural fabic which has suffered deteriotion.
This work was planned and specified in consultation with the Conservation Architect. The extension measures 130m² over two floors with butterfly zinc roof. The structural form included masonry walls, timber / steel lattice floor structure and steel roof. The sensitive nature of the site in terms of archaeology and protected trees meant that the site works for storm water management, foul drainage and water supply had to be carefully designed within a restricted framework of constraints. Permable surfaces were adopted for stormwater management and the foul drainage route was maticisiouly planned in consultation with the project Archaeologist. The building is now in use as office and meeting rooms for the United Dioceses of Cashel Ossory.
